Introduction
Nainital, located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, serene lakes, lush forests, and deeply rooted cultural heritage. Uttarakhand is broadly divided into two regions—Kumaon and Garhwal—each known for its rich traditions and natural beauty.
If you wish to explore offbeat destinations near Nainital, here are some unique places I have personally visited and highly recommend.
1. Bhimtal

If you wish to avoid the crowds of Nainital, choose Bhimtal instead. It is home to the largest lake in the Nainital district, featuring a picturesque island at its centre. Bhimtal is also known for hosting the region’s largest Harela fair.
The Bhimeshwar Mahadev Mandir, situated on the lake’s edge, is a peaceful spiritual spot.
The highest point in Bhimtal is Karkotak, dedicated to Nagdev, located around a 7-kilometre uphill hike from the town.
The celebrated Lok Sanskriti Museum, founded by Padma Shri awardee Dr. Yashodhar Mathpal, is located on the Bhimtal–Bhawali road and beautifully preserves the region’s cultural heritage.
2. Naukuchiatal

After exploring Bhimtal, plan a day trip to Naukuchiatal, one of the most tranquil lakes in the Kumaon region. Known for its raw, untouched beauty, it is one of my personal favourites.
You can enjoy water sports, especially kayaking, which is quite popular here.
A serene Lotus Taal, surrounded by dense forest, is also located nearby.
Several accommodation options are available, making it ideal for overnight stays.
The peaceful ambience of Naukuchiatal offers the perfect escape for nature lovers.
3. Golu Devta Mandir (Bhawali)

Golu Devta is the most revered deity of the Kumaon region. While the famous Golu Devta temple is located in Chittai (Almora), another significant shrine is situated in Ghorakhal, Bhawali, just 3 km from the main market and close to Sainik School.
This temple is uniquely covered in bells, tied by devotees who pray for justice and blessings. Golu Devta is widely known as the Lord of Justice in Kumaon.
4. Shyamkhet Tea Garden (Bhawali)

One of the most refreshing spots in the region, the Shyamkhet Tea Garden is perfect for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
The lush green tea estates offer a refreshing change from crowded tourist spots.
The area requires a small entry fee but is entirely worth it for the serene views and scenic beauty.
It provides a proper hill-station feel—almost reminiscent of North-Eastern India.
5. Bhalugaad Waterfall (Mukteshwar)

Located in Mukteshwar, Bhalugaad Waterfall is a hidden gem surrounded by dense forests. While the waterfall is lovely, the real charm lies in the journey.
Visitors need to walk around 3–4 kilometres from the entry point.
The trail is well-maintained and winds through lush forest paths, making the walk incredibly peaceful and enjoyable.
It’s an ideal place for nature walks, trekking, photography, and quiet reflection.
6. Kainchi Dham – Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram

Situated about 19.6 km from Nainital, Kainchi Dham is a deeply spiritual and widely respected ashram dedicated to Lord Hanuman Ji.
The ashram was established in the 1960s by Neem Karoli Baba (Lakshmi Narayan Sharma), believed by many to be an incarnation of Lord Hanuman.
Located at an altitude of 1400 metres, the ashram sits along the Nainital–Almora route.
Surrounded by mountains, dense forests, and a flowing river, it is peaceful and meditative.
The name Kainchi (meaning scissor in Hindi) comes from the shape of the two intersecting hills forming a scissor-like formation around the temple.
A must-visit for devotees, spiritual seekers, and anyone looking for tranquillity.
